COLLEGE OF NURSING

Aspirants for nursing courses should at least pass their senior secondary or equivalent examination preferably with Physics, Chemistry & Biology. Nearly 10,000 students are admitted to about 500 nursing schools in India every year. The minimum age of admission is seventeen years. Each state in India has its own organization for the registration of nurses. After successful completion of the education, a nurse should register himself/herself with the State’s Nurses Council to be eligible for employment. The Indian Nursing Council is an Autonomous Body under the Government of India that establishes a uniform standard of training for nurses, midwives and health visitors. Nursing programs are a combination of theory and practice. Students are given practical instructions by senior ward members during the period of nursing training. Nurse tutors organize and supervise the work of trainee nurses. Nurses also attend lectures regularly by specialists in various fields of medicine. Some of the days are completely devoted to lectures and study on various aspects of medicine and nursing.

ANM & GNM are three years diploma programs whereas B. Sc. Nursing is a four years degree program. Nursing has a wide career scope. It offers a variety of roles and the scope of responsibilities is broad. Employment of nurses is not just limited to hospitals and health care institutions. Nurses are also employed in military, schools, industrial houses and factories, railways and public sector medical departments. Qualified nurses are also employed by training institutes as educators.
